Google Applications Overview
In May 2009, Florida Institute of Technology decided to migrate all student email from an open source email solution called Cyrus to Gmail. This decision was made based upon feedback from students, faculty, staff, and the Office of Information Technology.
What is Google Applications?
Google Apps Education Edition allows Florida Institiute of Technology to give Google's communication and collaboration applications to our entire campus community for free. All services are hosted by Google and are available to users via any internet-connected computer and many mobile devices. Google Apps includes the following services:
- Gmail™* - provides gigabytes of email storage, highly effective spam filtering and powerful search;
- Google Calendar™ - allows easy coordination of work or class schedules, meetings and events online;
- Google Talk™ - supports free PC-to-PC voice calls and instant messaging;
- Google Docs™ - allows users to create and collaborate on documents and spreadsheets in real-time;

Time Line:
Fall Orientation 2009 (Key Date: August 11th)
All students have been given access to a Google Applications
domain, http://my.fit.edu/. To begin using GMail each student must request that we forward their TRACKS
email to Google. Use the activation button above to begin the process.All faculty and staff have also have been given access to a
Google Applications domain, http://go.fit.edu.
Winter Break (Key Date: December 14th)
Beginning December 14, 2009, we will migrate the remaining student
accounts from MailHost to Gmail, all new email will be delivered to Gmail. Any email stored on Mailhost will be migrated to Gmail
as quickly as possible. We wil notify you when your email migration is complete.
Summer 2010 (Key Date: August 2nd)
In order to provide a permanent email address to students we must change all
student email addresses from @fit.edu to @my.fit.edu. During the first year of the deployment emails to both @fit.edu and @my.fit.edu
will be delivered to students' Gmail accounts. However, on August 2, 2010 the @fit.edu addresses will be removed from the system. Any
emails sent to @fit.edu addresses will not be delivered and senders will receive failed delivery receipts instructiing them to use the
new email domain.
What will I get?
- Gigabytes of email storage. No more worries about having to delete mail.
- Instant messaging from right within your mailbox & free PC-to-PC voice calls.
- Google Calendar to schedule meetings, create events, and share calendars with others.
- Google Docs to create and share documents, spreadsheets and presentations online.
- Access to your information from anywhere with an internet connection. You can also access your email with a mobile device.
- A new permanent email address, TRACKS@my.fit.edu
Migration to Gmail
Upon student request we will automatically migrate any email stored on the Cyrus mail server to their new Gmail account.
