The Applied Computing C
enter features 32 Windows-based computers and 3
Macintosh OS 10 computers. All computers are networked and use the University's high speed internet connection.
Printing, black and white as well as laser color, is available for a reasonable cost. Visitors must use either a Florida Tech ID card or a Library DART card for printing transactions. In addition to an integrated computing environment, the lab also offers computers for digital video processing with both USB and IEE 1394 (Firewire) ports. A lounge is available with a vending machine for the study weary. Additionally, the center has work table space and accommodations for students working in groups or projects.
Policies
Reservations are not accepted at the Applied Computing Center, usage is on a first-come first-served basis. During peak times, such as
mid-terms and final exams, clients are limited to blocks of two hours, and Florida Tech students and faculty have priority over the
public.
Faculty who wish to reserve computers for class or project purposes are encouraged to contact Jennifer Charron, the Applied Computing
Center Manager (x8023), for arrangements
Usage Policies
The Applied Computing Center operates on the Florida Institute of Technology network and internet connection. Users therefore are
subject to the University's defined Acceptable Use Policy. Further, as this is a public lab, Pornography is strictly prohibited. We
keep logs of all computer activities and violators will be reported both to Florida Tech Security and the Melbourne Police Department.
The computers are for academic use only and use of chat clients (AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, etc) as well as IRC channels and chat rooms is
not permitted. Using message boards other than for research or academic collaboration is also not allowed. Repeated disregard for these
rules will result in the client being asked to leave the lab. If the user refuses to leave or continues to use the computing resources
inaproptiately, he/she may be escorted out by security and possibly banned from the lab and/or the campus.
Resources
Hardware
The Applied Computing Center features 33 Dell
Pentium 4 computers with 1 gigabyte of ram and plenty of hard disk space. . Also All computers have cd or dvd drives and floppy drives.
We also have three Macintosh computers featuring OS 10.
Three color scanners are available for client use with editing software.
A VHS/DVD dubbing system is available by appointment.
Software
Word-processing, statistical analysis, programming, and presentation development programs are available
on both the PC and Macintosh computers. See the software list for more details and/or use the Contact Us form.
If an instructor wishes to use his/her own software, the Applied Computing Center manager should be told whether it is to be run on a PC or a Macintosh. Software license documentation must be provided by the instructor. Additional helpful information would include how many students will be using the software, and for what duration of time (one semester or more). Please note that the instructor must have appropriate licenses and user information available before the software can be installed on Applied Computing Center computers. Please see the software policies for details on software installations.
The Applied Computing Center cannot provide personal tutoring on how to use the instructor's software. Software instruction should be incorporated in the instructor's curriculum. At the beginning of class it is helpful to survey the students on their computer literacy for usage with common software programs.
Internet
Internet access is available on all computers in the Applied Computing Center. Please become familiar with Center policies for
appropriate usage of the Internet, and appropriate search topics before using a workstation.
Charges
There is no charge for computer usage in the Applied Computing Center. Students have priority; however, the public may use the facility
by presenting proper identification.
Printing
Printing at the center is cost-per-page. Clients may use their Florida Tech ID card or a Library DART
card for printing. Money may be deposited on either card at the library's front desk on the first floor. The Applied Computing Center
does not make any cash transactions. Printing charges are as follows:

Disks
The Applied Computing Center does not sell or give away floppy or zip disks for students. Disks are available for checkout through the
library.
